HomeWork Task 1, 2 & 3

my short film will have an alternative narrative structure which will include flash back to other scenes that will explain the story a bit better but not a point that it will give away the whole story.
with the research that i have collected i will look at the kind of people including age and gender that like horror/thriller moves and base the story around them.
The Hook
the hook is the part of the narrative and story line that draws the viewer in and to continue watching the short film for example a hook could be a problem that happens in the storyline and as the viewer you want to get how that problem pans another thing could be the pace that the film is, it would make it hard for the viewer to want to stop watching it because if the audience is of youth age so around 14-19 its harder to keep attention.

My short film Hook

The hook of my short film is the flash back they keep unfolding the boys character and you want to know more about him and the fast pace editing will draw the viewers of the ages round 13-18 to be more interested in the short film and the end will leave them wanting more and thinking what could of happened to the him and the other characters.

I started my research on facebook and i came to find that most of the people who like horror are teenagers and the gender is just a bit one sided towards the male side. i went on to looking on there profiles and looked at some of the films they like and post and most of them are teen based. so using that information i need to think about  basing my short film around teens of that age.

my film is about a teenage boy that perviously had some sort of psychological problems and has killed a number of people. he now been freed after a number of years and he is walking home. a group of boys see him and start to follow him to attempt to rob him and to a normal person on the street you would think that it is just a sad boy trying to get home. as the boy is walking he stops and starts to twitch, which is when he is having flash backs of when he was in the physiatric hospital and when he was at his worst point in time killing his mother and father. when the boy finally catch up to him and attempts to rob him he goes back in to the state he used to be in and then it cuts to backness then all four boys are on the flour dead and he walks away with a smile on his face but still you cant see his face.

finance;i will need to buy:
  • A camera - Canon EOS 1200D DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens. which would cost £279.99
  • A boom mic - Rode Videomic which would cost about £55.00
  • An LED light for the camera - which would cost around £49.99
  • Editing suite - which would cost about £300-500 per day so all editing should be completed in a day to save further cost being wasted
  • studio in which to do voice over dubs - which would cost about £200 with an engineer present also should be completed in a day.
  • The Crew people operating the cameras, boom mics etc. - would cost all together about £500 a day
  • Materials things like copyrighted content like music or videos and photos shown - about £80
  • The talent because i will be using drama students i will not be spending a lot of money on them - £100

Time
Timing is very important because the more time we use filming and editing the more money that is being used. so it is important that deadlines are met and not going over. so for the recording and filming it should take at most 2 days to get all the shots needed and nothing more. for the editing because its £500 a day it all should be finished in a day and no longer or the editor will be charged. the same thing applies to doing the over dubs all must be completed in a day, you will have the whole day to do it so thats more than enough time to recored. The planning and prep would take up to a week so that nothing is left out and that all the location are safe to use and all the crew are available etc.
materials
In the short film there will be non-diagetic sound/music and it may be copy righted so i will need to pay for clearance so that i can use it this may range from £10-£50. if i do not pay for clearance i may be sued and would cost a lot more than just paying for it to be cleared. this also applies to photos in the background.
crew and personnel
i well need a camera operator to work the camera making sure that he get all the shots we need in the space or the two day deadline. A boom mic operator to work along side the camera operator. editor who can sort out all the shots taken and put them together within the 1 day deadline which is a lot of work so i will need to hire a very experienced person who has been in this kind of situation and can work fast and good. a sound engineer who can can also work for 1 day and is able to work fast and good to a high standard.
locations
the locations will be free because i will be filming in a public such as alleys near sidcup station so it will not cost me anything

180 degree rule:
This an imaginary line that goes between two characters which the camera or set of cameras must not cross. Its a mainstream type of editing as it allows and keeps continuity. It uses different combination of shots such as shot reverse shot and over the shoulder shot to show conversation between two characters it also engages the viewer by letting them know who a character is talking to or talking about, the main purpose of the 180 degree rule is to keep one character on a particular and another character on the other side of the screen the rule also follows the action as it
happens. We can seethe rule been used alot in the trailer of man of steel mainly during conversations.

the opening scene is a long shot of the little girl in her room which makes it look very small and isolated and on her own making her very vulnerable. the shot is at a low angle slowly zooming in to her face which is suggesting that something is coming from underneath the bed and down below is normally associated with hell so something evil may be coming from under.

when her father walks in they kept continuity very well with the use of the 180 degree rule as you can see with the screenshots provided on the left. you can see the rule was applied and used well, all the shots stayed on one side of the action line. also here they used a two shot which was obviously to capture both people in the shot but also it is a very good example of one.

In this screenshot the doll is position in a weird way, us as the viewers we know that because this a horror/thriller a little girl and/or a doll is normally possessed is a convention on the genre but also the doll is surrounded by other childish toys that look harmless and cute which contrast between the two because one is innocent while the other one is evil creating juxtaposition.
In this shot there is a low angle shot of the doll showing that it is dominant

The costume that the girl is wearing implies that the doll was once innocence and it also shows that she may be vulnerability and that she may be entrapped in somebody else's body.

short film analysis 1

In this short film you instantly aware that this is going to be a thriller by just the location alone. as you can see the guy roaming around is on a dark abandoned road in which no car are coming or going at any point in the movie showing that it is deserted. the fact that it is deserted makes the character vulnerable and makes it easier for the antagonist to get to the victim, so that shows the genre from the outset and throughout.

In the movie the person roaming as you can see looks like he is wearing normal everyday clothes showing this is just a normal day for him nothing out of the usual until he encounters the smiling man. the smiling man is wearing a suit and in thrillers a suit is can be iconic to an antagonist.

in this film the scene is quick dark and not a lot of light as you can see or tell most of the light is coming from the street lights that seem to be quite strong. when we are looking at the antagonist there is a constant use of low key lighting so that we as the viewers are kept in suspense and we don't know much about the smiling man, i the thriller genre this is used to show the mystery man or antagonist, so by seeing the lighting on him we know that he is the mystery man.

on the other hand we have a lot of high key lighting making it much easier for us to see the roaming man and his facial expressions because he is our main character and also our victim so we need to see and feel how is feeling from at the start when he was thinking the smiling man is a drunk man walking the streets at night to when he is cautious about being around him and using high key lighting helps us to get that understanding.

Throughout the film they used a lot of close ups and what the close ups did was to tell or inform us of the mental state of the main character. as you can see his facial expressions are changing as the film progresses  as he and we learn more about this mysterious smiling man, at first he thought he was a drunk stumbling on the pavement so he is smiling.

Then he starts to get worried because he is staring at him and we can see that very well because of the use of close ups.

Now we see that he is very cautious about being around this smiling man and he is trying to go away. so by using close ups we can see the contrast of how he felt at the start which was relaxed and settled strolling to a destination maybe his house.

in this long shot you can see the dark location and how the smiling man is framed in it so we can imagine what it would be like in the man's perspective, but still you can't see his face which maintains the mystery of the smiling man.

the use of POV allows us to see exactly what he is seeing and makes us feel more engaged in the film making that thriller feel of something bad happening.
also the use of a low angle shot showing that he is more power or dominate over the man.

in the start of the film there was some music playing which was non diegetic sound which was in the minor key i think which is normally used for serious or sad music this is showing us that something bad is going to happen or nothing good is going to come out of this situation. The the music changed into some uncomfortable sounds that is quite loud and screeching which suggest some sort of danger.
