Unit 1: Pre Production Report

Introduction

this is a pre production report that will outline and explain; the type of production that i will be doing, the finance so things such as where i will source the money for the production of the short film, the time frame, how long each stage of the production process should take at any point in time. the materials that will be used in the film for example non-diagetic sound that is used i will need to make sue that it is copy right free and or i will need to clear it so that i am able to use it without breaching the copyright act 1988. the crew and personnel, from the people who be operating the camera to the people who will be actin in the film and i will talk about how i will source them. i will also be talking about the location where it is and how i will seek permission for me to film there. and lastly i will be talking about the codes and regulations that i will have to follow and comply to throughout the production of the film.

Type of production

I will be producing a 1 minute short film called 'Temper, Temper' my short film will have an alternative narrative structure which will include flash back to other scenes that will explain the story a bit better but not a point that it will give away the whole story. My short film is a thriller and i changed my idea to better suit my creative ablity about a young boy who lived a completely normal live and as soon as he turned 12 he developed a bit of a temper and gets frustrated and agitated until he switches and entires a state of pure chaos, but his parent think it's just a faze and that it is nothing to worry about until someone gets hurt….
The idea came from EastEnders character of bobby a little boy who get angry all the time and I changed it bit and made him a bit more aggressive.
my role as the producer of the short film i have to sort out the finance, sort out the timing, crew and personnel, Facilities, materials, contributors, locations, codes of practice and regulations.

Finance;

All in all i will need about £2600 for the production of this short film and that money will pay for thing like transport to the cameras that will be used in it. also things like clearances of locations and materials. i will be fundraising the money using a website called kick-starter which will allow me to pitch my idea to people and they will be able to give me money to get started.
i will need to buy:
A camera - Canon EOS 1200D DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm Lens. which would cost £279.99.A boom mic - Rode Videomic which would cost about £55.00. An LED light for the camera - which would cost around £49.99. Editing suite - which would cost about £300-500 per day so all editing should be. completed in a day to save further cost being wasted. studio in which to do voice over dubs - which would cost about £200 with an engineer present also. should be completed in a day. The Crew people operating the cameras, boom. mics etc. - would cost all together about £500 a day. Materials things like copyrighted content like music or videos and photos shown - about £80
The talent because i will be using drama students i will not be spending a lot of money on them - £100
i will source the money from a number places because its so much. the first place will be kickstarter which is a website that allows you to pitch an idea or a film etc. and people are able to fund money into your idea as shown in the picture.
the second source of money will be from me the producer i have set aside £500 for start up money.

Time

Timing is very important because the more time we use filming and editing the more money that is being used. so it is important that deadlines are met and not going over. so for the recording and filming it should take at most 2 days to get all the shots needed and nothing more. for the editing because its £500 a day it all should be finished in a day and no longer or the editor will be charged. the same thing applies to doing the over dubs all must be completed in a day, you will have the whole day to do it so thats more than enough time to recored. The planning and prep would take up to a week so that nothing is left out and that all the location are safe to use and all the crew are available etc.

Materials

In the short film there will be non-diagetic sound/music and it may be copy righted so i will need to pay for clearance so that i can use it this may range from £10-£50. if i do not pay for clearance i may be sued and would cost a lot more than just paying for it to be cleared. this also applies to photos in the background.

Contributor

the talent that is needed is a small boy about 11 years old, a mother, a father some extras on the street. i will be able to use the drama students at my collage to be apart of the production as for the 11 year old i would be able to look for one on the website mandy.com where o can hire all sorts of media production roles.

Crew and personnel

i will need a camera operator to work the camera making sure that he get all the shots we need in the space or the two day deadline and someone who is well qualified and is able to follow the story board and shot list to the picture
. A boom mic operator to work along side the camera operator they need to have some chemistry so that they can work together with some sort of flow and we will not have people tripping baring in mind we are working to deadlines.
editor who can sort out all the shots taken and put them together within the 1 day deadline which is a lot of work so i will need to hire a very experienced person who has been in this kind of situation and can work fast and good.
a sound engineer who can can also work for 1 day and is able to work fast and good to a high standard, also someone that has a good ear so that we will not need to redo everything.
I will be sourcing all the crew from a website called mandy.com where i am able to rent out equipment and crew members. with this website i am able to search for crew members and i am able to find ones that fit into my budget that way i will be spending less money and money that i dont need to go over on also when i am trying to booking out studios and editing suits it allows me to find ones that are close to me and also cheaper, some of them even include editors and sound engineers.

Facilities

In this part I will be creating a list of equipment I might need in the post production, production and pre production stage of  in my web serial.
So the kit list would have things like :
for the production stage:

  • Camera(dslr)-which will be rented from collage using the collage booking system which i will need to go to mr french about.
  • Tripod-i will be able to access from collage also using the collage booking system.
  • Boom mic-this i will need to source out from ebay, and that will cost me £54.00.
  • Lights- i will also source the LED lights from ebay, which will cost me about
  • Props
  • Reflectors- the reflectors come with the LEDs so i will not have to pay for them
  • For the post production stage:
  • Imac
  • Final cut Pro x
  • Compressor

locations

In the movie that i am producing the main location will be in the house and some parts are in a car and also on the streets. for me to film in the house i will need the permission of the home owner for me to film. for the car the permission of the car owner. and when i am filming i will be in the belxey council so i will have to get in contact with the belxey film office

so that i can get a permit to film, there is also a possibility that i might be charged for the permit, but there will be money for that in the budget.

Codes of Practise and Regulations

When doing the final edit i as the producer will need to make sure that there is no copyright protected material in the film that has not been paid for or cleared. Gaining the local council's permission should happen and be settled at least 2 week before so that we are able to film with no quarms. A risk assessment will be carried out on all the locations to make sure that everyone is safe and it is okay to film in that condition. The local police will need to be informed that filmmaking is happening due to the fact that we might be filming a scene where someone is being provoked by a weapon they will not see it in the wrong way. Also we need to make sure that we have the public liability insurance which will protect you if any of the crew or any member of the public get hurt or property gets damaged while you are filming. Lastly while making the film i need to keep in mind what certific i want to give the movie so i can work towards that and when it comes for me to give it into the bbfc i will not have any quarms about making cuts in the film.

Draft Proposal

Introduction

The purpose of this report is so that you can have a gist of the vision I have in my head about something that will not only benefit me and getting my work out there but also to give your company a good name and even to increase your audience share.
I have done some primary and also secondary research in to the target audience that we are trying to get to watch the short film. I also did research into where it can be published so we can get the biggest audience share.

The main idea

My short film is a thriller about a young boy who lived a completely normal live and as soon as he turned 12 he developed a bit of a temper and gets frustrated and agitated until he switches and entires a state of pure chaos, but bec  just a faze and that it is nothing to worry about until someone gets hurt….
So ill let you find out who what and when it happens when you watch it yourself
The idea came from EastEnders character of bobby a little boy who get angry all the time and I changed it bit and made him a bit more aggressive.

Research

For my secondary research I went online and looked at the views that the story line where bobby, the character that is similar to mine, was at his worst point so I can see how popular it was and if it got people watching and keeping them engaged in the story line because I don’t want to lose the audience I’m trying to gain more views. At the time that this story line was going on in EastEnders the average view a week was 8 million + so that shows that it was quite popular and people wanted to see more and more as the views watching.

I also read about this kind of behavior from children when they are used to getting what they want and when someone finally tells them no and that they can’t have something they go over bored and starts to react in a dramatic way but depending on the child and how long the problem has been getting worse for. By putting this into my story it adds a sense of realism and shows that this is not a fictional subject but is well and truly in our society, so it also adds a moral to the film that will not be easy to clock at first but adds that artistic feel to it.

USP

The unique selling point of my short film is that it is that it is taken from a real life situation and it will seem more interesting because it happens in the world we live in today.

Rating

I would have wanted this to get a 15 rating if the bbfc where to rate it I think I would have kept in the borderlines for it.
In the primary research I did I found out that the target audience are people aged from about 18-30 year olds I retrieved this information by looking at over popular short films on YouTube the looking in the comment section at the people who are commenting on the videos and then I looked there profiles and there channels to see what kind of things they are sharing and posting so that I can see a trend in what they want to see and I saw that they loved to see some sort of twist and jump scare something that they would never thought would happen at all.

Budget
